GPDSC is an independent agency within the judicial branch of State government created under the Georgia Indigent Defense Act of 2003. The office is responsible for assuring that adequate and effective legal representation is provided to Georgia's citizens, independent of political considerations or private interests. GPDSC sets professional standards and provides administrative support for the 49 defender circuit offices is Georgia.

The Georgia Public Defender Standards Council(GPDSC) is the state agency responsible for improving the criminal justice system for Georgia's poorest citizens. The Council's mission is to assure the provision of representation and to improve the quality of that representation for indigent persons who are charged in the criminal courts or who are parties to actions in the juvenile courts of Georgia. This agency does not provide direct representation.
